Basket weaving starts with the purchase of a good quality willow. The raw material is typically cultivated willow, which was bred in the 18th century specifically for basket weaving. It has excellent physical properties, excellent bending properties and can be twisted without breaking.
After the harvest, which follows the fall of the leaves, the willow is sorted and graded several times before being cooked. The willow is then ready for skinning, i.e. the husk is peeled. After drying, it can be stored in a dry, airy place for up to several years. Soaking for 3 hours before spinning is necessary.
