Live willows in pots are planted in January and woven into a trellis structure before the leaves emerge.
In the following months, the part of the cane in the soil starts to take root and at the same time a large crown of leaves appears on top of the structure.
It requires a lot of moisture, so it needs a lot of watering. It must be kept moist at all times when potted.
By November, the plant will have established a dense root system, which should be planted in a larger pot or planted directly into the ground, giving it room to grow for the following seasons. At this time the canopy can be cut back over the braided branches, this will help maintain strong and regular growth of the braid.
With this pruning, the bush can be kept at the same height year after year. After 4-5 years, the braid starts to merge.
